Gigabyte recently got into a little hot water by touting the superior quality of its products that were made in Taiwan. The bad news is that most of them have moved their manufacturing to China.Īs others have posted, VAIO (used to be part of Sony but is no longer) and Gigabyte are the two major brands that are bucking the trend by keeping the bulk of their manufacturing in Japan and Taiwan respectively. The good news is that most ODMs are Taiwan-based. Every major brand uses ODMs-for example, Quanta has sold to Apple, Dell, HP, Alienware, and Lenovo Compal has sold to Dell, HP, Compaq, and Toshiba and so on. Once the laptop space got commoditized, brands have ODMs (original design manufacturers) create the "guts" of the laptop, and then slap their brand on it and add bells and whistles before selling them.
